Dream Field 2.0
Dream Field 2.0 is a real-time AI agent simulation. It is a virtual ecosystem born from the latent space of deep neural networks. In the shifting landscape, creatures morph into each other constantly, inheriting memories from other individuals and species to form strange hybrid memories. Behind the evolving 3D world, which is rendered with ML-driven 3D mesh generation and real-time diffusion generated textures inside Unreal Engine, is a Python-based LLM agent simulation that maintains ecological balance, and organizes the creatures’ memories, thoughts, and actions. This is a modded version of an open-source LLM simulation system originally designed to simulate human communities. By repurposing this anthropocentric simulation system, Dream Field 2.0 breathes life into an imaginary shapeshifting world driven by cross-species memory lineages. It results in a stranger world: agents whose memories and behaviors seem part human, part AI, part nonhuman creature. To what extent can LLMs really simulate humans, nonhumans, hybrids, or more? What kind of stories can these hybrid agents tell?
The project also speculates on an alternative future of AI development beyond training rooted in human-centric data, and instead learns from the entire ecosystem. Additionally, the work seeks to create a new medium for AI-driven worldbuilding, exploring interactive worlds that evolve constantly, and are no longer constrained to static 3D models and textures.
About the Artist
Yvonne Fang (b. Shanghai, China) is an artist and creative technologist currently based in San Francisco. She makes generative game worlds, simulations, and interactive XR experiences in collaboration with AI (LLMs, diffusion models) and using software such as Unreal Engine. Through creating AI-driven systems, she seeks to introduce nonhuman perspectives into her works, unsettling anthropocentric ways of thinking in a time of climate crisis. Beyond simulations, she builds her own AI tools, including a co-creative digital drawing canvas to enable new modalities of human-AI creative collaboration.
